What are Bone Marrow Aspirate and Biopsy

To look for the signs of cancer and to further establish the presence of cancer, a test is conducted. This test includes the removal of a little sample of liquid from inside the bone which is then sent off to the research center for additional investigation under the magnifying lens and testing. This is known as a bone marrow aspiration.

In a bone marrow biopsy, a little specimen of the bone is taken which is concentrated intently under the magnifying lens.

Some patients will have to undergo both tests at the same time, whereas for some, a single test would suffice. The samples are generally gathered from the large hip bone in the lower back of the kid.

Before the procedure starts, the child is administered a sedative which causes them to feel relaxed during the entire procedure and also feel less pain. However, before the child is sedated, there are strict rules to be followed with regard to what they eat and drink.

Each test requires around 15 mins followed by a 30-minute break.

What is the purpose of this test?

Bone marrow biopsy and aspirate are finished to see whether your youngster’s bone marrow ( a liquid that is situated inside the bone) is creating normal platelets. The information about your child’s health from their bone marrow cannot be obtained by any other physical means of testing.

To collect the samples, doctors use two different types of needles. These are carefully inserted into your child’s hip bone and the collected samples are studied under the microscope.

Special Needs

In case your child has any special needs that the doctor should know about, tell them before the tests are taken. Only then the right tests will be taken based on the child’s physical health. It is mandatory to notify such situations in advance before any tests or diagnoses are about to begin.
